Stakeholder perceptions of the benefits and barriers of implementing environmental management systems in the Maldivian construction industry

Abstract Unprecedented increases in both tourism and population growth have put extreme pressure on the Republic of Maldives, which has resulted significant changes to islands as a result construction activities. This study is first investigate perceptions benefits barriers implementing environmental management systems (EMS) Maldivian industry, what effective measures strategies exist drive practices. A subjectivist stance deductive approach been taken with an online survey adopting quantitative strategy range professions across sector. Using central tendency measure weighted average, respondents’ opinions suggest that primary having EMS Maldives are perceived enhancement corporate image protection; while major lack legal enforcement requirement for company structures policies change accommodate EMS. The findings also those companies who establish waste plan where authorities enforce requirements believed be most means encourage more widespread adoption. Based these findings, it recommended managers, need increasingly promote principles sustainable practices/behaviours amongst industry stakeholders. Furthermore, policy makers within should exploring viability establishing financial incentive schemes (particularly SMEs), addition encouraging wider adoption EMSs sectors.
